He first joined the military at the age of 32, In , a 6-year-long war broke out as Japanese chancellor Hideyoshi subdued regional conflicts across the Japanese island and Hideyoshi turned his greed to conquer China.
Joseon, now where Korea stands, was a strong ally to the Chinese empire at that time, and Joseon located in the middle of China and Japan. So geographic importance of making Joseon as an ally to Japan prior to the war against the Chinese empire was evident to the Hideyoshi army.
That's where it all began. Yi Sun-sin protected the southwestern side of the Korean peninsula for many years.
No defeats, only the victory was his achievement. It was a very crucial part of the war, as those victories obscured the supply chain to landed Japanese camps.
Ironically, after the breakout of the war, the King ran away from the capital-all people in the nation knew it and cursed him. The King was afraid-while he was being cursed by peasants, Yi Sun-sin became an indomitable guardian, protecting the sea in all battles.
The king ended up reprimanding the Admiral for no reason made up schemes by haters and decommissioned Yi. You notice that at the very beginning Admiral Yi got tortured, this is where it came from It didn't take long enough to hurt him once more, his mother died and he couldn't stay with her.
While it as happening to Yi, on the battlefield, the next admiral valorously fought against the Japanese fleet, and the Joseon fleet was almost completely defeated.
It was only 12 battleships left when Yi was commissioned to the admiral rank, naval forces were discouraged completely. Thus this movie describes Admiral Yi's anguish-he had to not only come up with a strategy to stop the Japanese fleet rushing to the northwest through the southwestern bay, but he also had to find a way to encourage his men and put strong faith in them.
Interestingly, Admiral Yi was living voodoo magic to the Japanese fleet until Yi was decommissioned. All the Japanese naval forces feared Yi Sun-sin as he never lost his battle.
Considering all this history, now you may watch the movie a little bit advanced. Admiral: Roaring Currents is based on the true battle yet details are dramatized.
It focuses on the battle scenes so visual dynamics can be quite attractive. However, such dramatized battle alone can't out-dramatize the real story of Admiral Yi.
Indeed, If there's a film more focusing on the whole picture, it would have been extremely difficult for foreign movie watchers to understand.
For that reason, this movie can be a good one for the international market. However, in my personal view, by knowing all the facts, just a mere focus on one battle wasn't that dramatic to me.
All the Japanese forces retreated right away-they were also tired of this endless battle. Admiral Yi and Chinese reinforcement chased the Japanese naval forces.
He didn't want to let go of them. He wanted to avenge, avenge all the people who suffered and lost, who were raped, looted, and killed. It was his last battle when he got shot dead, demolished about Japanese battleships, and killed a few thousands of enemies.
Now his statue stands in the capital city Seoul with one of the greatest kings in Korean history. People cherish his unconquerable resolve, his noble sacrifice, his loyalty to the people.
An awesome movie with big budget and long time to complete. Just look at the costumes, already well worth the money. This movie has great plot, great acting, plus great pictures if you are watching it in high definition.
The never-say-die attitude by the Admiral makes this movie very interesting, 12 ships versus the enemy's ?? The fighting scenes are also beautifully put together.
This is the first Korean-made fighting movie, and I love it. Watched it three times already within a week. You won't be disappointed, and I rated this 5 out of 5.
Blown Away. My god what a great film. Love action? Get this, 50 minutes of Open water battles, Ship to Ships, Hand to hand and an Intense Score to to make you sit on the edge of your seat.
Saw this in Los Angeles movie theater in with my family. My 10 year old son loved it. Called it the greatest movie he has ever seen.
Blu Ray DVD arrived less than 2 days, great. The images looks fantastic and really does bring out the rich colors of the Japanese and Korean armor.
The CGI is good, not easy enough to distinguish what is real and what is virtual. The images is free of any noticeable flaws.
The sounds are great with roaring cannons, crashing waves and the screams of sailors, pounding sounds of war without leaving the viewer shell shocked in the process.
English dubbing was terrible as you should listen in Korean with English subtitles. Bonus materials in Blu-ray comes up short, offering only a short "making of", a teaser and full trailer.
The Admiral Roaring Currents is truly an epic in every way. Its telling of an underdog force fending off villainous invaders easily translates to the exotic location of late 16th century Korea.
It looks and sounds great on Blu-ray and this one is surly one of the great naval epics ever made. This is a very good movie based on a real life incident.
As with most "based on" movies, there are some liberties taken. I love this movie. It could have turned a profit in US theaters even with the easy to read subtitles.

While the set up is necessary the character interest isn't that great, leaving the first half a little bland and a bit dramatic.
The naval battles have some entertainment value in them. Employed by some CG, which is not bad, the events on the Myeongnyang Strait goes back and forth with intriguing action elements.
Min-sik Choi leads like he knows how to do. Seung-ryong Ryu has a devilish persona to him. The rest of the cast falls into battle formation.

Best Netflix Series and Shows. Go back. While the set pieces and most parts of the story are faithful to the historical background, some elements depicting the different historical characters and parts of the battle itself might be dramatized to a certain degree.
That's why the movie has a slightly patriotic touch but this is only some minor criticism as this film isn't as exaggerated as many contemporary Chinese war movies for example.
In the end, fans of epic war movies will get what they desire. The naval battle is detailed, diversified, emotional, entertaining, epic and intense.
It's probably the best naval battle in the history of cinema. This stunning second half pardons for a few lengths in the opening hour that sets the context of the battle in a solid but also slightly dusty and lengthy way.
This film isn't the best Korean movie of all times by any means and maybe slightly over-hyped. Still, this is better than any comparable war history movie from the Western world I have seen in the past ten years or more.

Rotten Tomatoes as of today, has four reviews, three of which are positive. I got interested in this movie because of the naval battle involved, The Battle of Myeongnyang Wikipedia in The Koreans are, of course, good hard-working citizens.
Yi's choice of the battle location in a narrow straight with extremely strong currents proved to be even more advantageous than expected.
Mit 12 Kriegsschiffen sieht sich Yi einer japanischen Flotte von Schiffen gegenüber. With the Japanese army advancing towards Hanyang modern day Seoul and the Japanese Navy having near-total control of the sea, Yi Sun-Sin was hastily pardoned and reinstated as the commander of the Korean Navy.

At the end of the movie, the Japanese fleet have one when they see a turtle ship sailing towards them, beginning the Battle of Noryang.
The film is set in the second Japanese invasion of Korea in At the time of the battle, the Korean navy had no turtle ships at all, as all of them had been sink in the previous Battle of Chilcheollyang.
These are fairly large warships powered by men below decks with oars. Dabei nutzt er Strömungen aus, um einen Vorteil zu erlangen und besiegt die japanische Flotte.
Some critics loved the drama of the large scale battles: unfortunately, I saw CG and took issue with the wake thrown up by speeding oar-powered boats.
