I should have looked more closely at the age recommendation on the back of the cover because this manga is definitely meant for mature audiences.
This is hard to tell from the first story, Happy the Blue Cat, which is existential and sweet. Hiro Mashima has collected various stories he's created for his characters and they are anthologized here.
Even if you are as ignorant of the characters and their world, you'll quickly get a context for everything and everyone.
Juvia has a crush on Gray which is alluded to in the second story but then fleshed out more in Days. The cat from the first story is an Exceed, a sort of pet cum familiar, and there's an adorable story about one of them getting lost and trying to find a way back to the guild.
This story is apparently based on a Japanese television show but don't worry. You don't have to know this before reading. I enjoyed the story and it wasn't until I read the author's notes at the end of the manga that I understood the context.
In the end, I enjoyed this manga very much but I don't think I'll give it to my granddaughter. I think my son will enjoy it more.
