Eine Freundin von mir machte Kunstturnen. Sie begann mit 4 Jahren und dann eben war alles nur noch der Sport- da gab es keine Zeit mit Freunden, Kino oder sowas, sondern nur Training nach der Schule.
Aber sie kam aus keiner Vorzeigefamilie, ihre Eltern waren geschieden, die Mutter egozentrisch, sieht in der Tochter nur das Sport-Ass.
Weil sie die Beste war. Ihr Leben war nicht leicht und das zeigt der Film, auch, wenn sie im Film selbst mit dem Zuschauer spricht- fand ich super gemacht.
Es brachte mir alles sehr nahe und ich langweilte mich nie- wobei denn? Good, unusual film, part comedy although sad in places, based on the real case of leading American skater Tonya Harding, who became mixed up in a plot to injure rival American skater Nancy Kerrigan in an attack with a metal bar to remove her from competition.
Fortunately Tonya's idiot husband and his even more stupid friends bungled the attack. While Nancy Kerrigan was bruised badly no more serious injury was done and she went on compete successfully in the Olympics.
For Tonya Harding, whose life since age 4 had been built around the quest for skating stardom and knew no other life or career, the consequent public disgrace and ban for life from skating were a tragedy in the classical sense, of someone brought from high to low by a character flaw, although she escaped prison.
We see her as a small girl talking to some of the other children in her skating class, in what might have been the beginning of friendship, only to be told off by her mother "Don't talk to them.
They're not your friends, they're your enemies". Pulled out of school to concentrate many hours a day on skating practice, consequently having little social experience, Tonya may have ended up with the violent fool of a husband who helped ruin her career because she lacked the experience of mixing with young men or the advice of women friends that might have helped her make a better choice.
This is a good film as much for the way it is done as for the actual story. As some of the facts around the case are still disputed, we are sometimes given different versions of the same scene according to what different characters claim happened, or characters turn to the camera to deny that it was really like that.
The solo competitive skating scenes are good although to me intrinsically less interesting than two partner ice dancing.
I wish I had been able to convey better in this review why 'I, Tonya' is such a good film, but it is.
A film that I have had on my watchlist and in my blu-ray collection for a while after missing it at the cinema. Figure Skating Championships.
However her future in the sport is thrown into doubt when her ex-husband Sebastian Stan intervenes. The story itself is told through different perspectives of the main characters, this does mean the film does get slightly unfocused at times and the frequent time jumping does become slightly jarring.
The film is sharply written with some biting dramatic moments and painfully honest emotional moments as well as being funnier and wittier than most full on comedies.
From a technical perspective the film is impressive. The way the aspect ratio and filters over the footage gives the film a distinct and documentary style to the interviews and allows the rest of the story to look even more cinematic.
The choreography and cinematography for the skating sequences is very well done and the camera follows every movement making it tense as well as calm and easy to follow.
There are various creative editing techniques throughout and the film has a consistent pace that is never dull over the 2 hour runtime. Each track works perfectly for the scene it is implemented in.
The performances here are brilliant. Margot Robbie completely immersed herself in the role of Tonya Harding, altering her accent and having a significant change in her physical appearance for the role.
When you see the footage of the actual Tonya as the credits role you really see how accurate Robbie was. Sebastian Stan probably gives the best performance I have seen him in here.
I, Tonya is a very entertaining and engaging biopic which stands out with its attitude, fourth wall breaking dialogue and brilliant cast that have great chemistry.

In , she became the first woman to successfully execute two triple axels in a single competition. She married Jeff Gillooly Sebastian Stan as a teen and their relationship quickly became abusive.
Harding finished fourth in the Winter Olympics and went home to be a waitress, where Coach Diane Rawlinson Julianne Nicholson convinced her to begin training for the Winter Olympics.
The event became a media sensation, resulting in Harding being banned from competitive ice skating. I, Tonya says surprisingly little about Nancy Kerrigan, though roughly half the film is devoted to the assault and its aftermath, and attempts to portray Tonya Harding as just as much a victim.
In real life, however, Nancy Kerrigan also grew up in poverty. Her father sometimes worked three jobs and drove a Zamboni at a local ice rink in exchange for her skating lessons.
Toxic relationships in this film mean motivations are always suspect. Only there was truth; Nancy Kerrigan really was assaulted with a baton. Shawn Eckhardt really was delusional and a pathological liar.
There were consequences for these realities that Tonya Harding had to live with for the rest of her life. This is a clever way to address a common problem with movies based on real people and events.
Filmmakers frequently alter events or simply invent things in order to make a compelling story. I, Tonya tells its audience: this is true, according to a particular perspective.
I, Tonya is a clever and creative take on an infamous incident from the s. I doubt many people under the age of 25 have ever heard of Tonya Harding or Nancy Kerrigan, but for people alive at the time, this incident was almost as sensational as the OJ Simpson trial.
Actress Margot Robbie, who also produced the film, continues to impress and will hopefully be involved in more creative projects like this.
Probably should not admit that I have always had more sympathy for Tonya Harding than most, having come from a similar background and completely 'getting' the desperation of that culture.
The film does a pretty good job of re-humanizing Tonya, although I think you'd be pretty naive to believe it ever aimed to tell the truth.
I especially like it because its puts the lasting damage of domestic violence right there under your nose where you cannot ignore it's ugliness.
But the film never actually excuses what Tonya did,.. We'll probably never know just how involved she actually was, and I will always think her court sentence was handed down with the same mean-spirited attitude that she knew throughout her career from skating judges.
Self-fulfilling prophecy? You decide. I would really like to see Allison Janney get an Oscar for supporting actress. I have loved watching videos of Tonya Harding performances.
I had little hope that Margot Robbie, poised and pretty in interviews about the film, would ever do justice to this story.
Well, she brought it. We get the sense from beginning the producers know their best bet is to stay out of way and let these often doofy characters tell their story.
So glad actual footage of Tonya performance is shown at end so a younger audience can experience her joy, the crowd on its feet, her landmark performance in sports.
And clips of actual characters at end reaffirm Quite a remarkable character study with a comedic slant.
I really hate to say it but there wasn't a single character in this film that I liked or could understand their motives beyond their propensity for complete and total self-interest.
I couldn't relate to them but I think that's part of the appeal of the story. You have all these central characters who appear to be protagonists which is new outside of most gangster films but fascinating in the extreme.
The performances were impeccable. I really enjoyed Margot Robbie but having no prior experience with her work I couldn't judge her transformation.
Allison Janney stole the show, she truly disappeared into the role and was almost hypnotic to watch. Overall it's an interesting flick and a carte blanche black comedy, watch out for the bumps and enjoy the ride.
