Daniel has survived severe physical abuse at the hands of the Chilean secret police in the colony's subterranean torture chamber, but he is a bit worse for the wear.
Besides his physical injuries, his speech is slurred and he now talks and acts like a child. Lena finally catches sight of Daniel when she steals a glance through the window of the colony's assembly hall during a men's meeting and is obviously concerned about his state of mind.
Soon after, at a rare meeting with the cult's men and women all together, Lena takes the risk of approaching Daniel, hoping that the two of them can come up with a plan to escape the cult, something no one has done before.
But there's much more at stake than "just" the fate of two young lovers. Besides the terrible ways that Schäfer uses and abuses his followers, it turns out that he's also into some other nasty business that further reduces even the slim chance that Daniel and Lena have to get away for good.
The story is perhaps best understood as a combination of "The Boys from Brazil", M. This film's unusual setting contributes to its originality, as does telling a story in which it's the woman who comes to rescue the man.
The actors are well cast, and this accomplished multi-national ensemble consistently offers up lived-in performances.
The script co-written by Torsten Wenzel and Gallenberger is creative and smart. There may not be much actual dignity in the Colonia Dignidad compound, but this film dignifies itself with some quality story-telling.

Watson gives a serious, determined mien to her character. Kate Muir. The Colony has decent enough production values but still feels silly and overwrought.
Geoffrey Macnab. Very silly stuff: but of some value as a quasi-historical footnote. Peter Bradshaw. Cath Clarke. Watson and Bruhl give it their best, and Nyqvist makes a powerful villain, but "Colonia" winds up being a movie that wants to get its way on too many levels, and winds up not satisfying on most of them.
Glenn Kenny. Watson, with her razor-sharp Hermione Granger conviction very much intact, gives us reason to care about her character's predicament even as the dramatics that put her there prove considerably less convincing.
Michael Rechtshaffen. It's clear that Gallenberger is well-intentioned but his film trivialises what was a terrible reality.
Alexa Dalby. Yet, even with cinema-savvy actors Emma Watson and Daniel Brühl, Colonia can't quite seem to gain the traction needed to be a standout film.

View All Critic Reviews Dec 21, For a movie based on real events this thriller actually does not go very deep. The everyday routine on the Nazi-cult Colonia is properly horrifying and the showdown pretty exciting, albeit a tad over the top.
But we learn very little about the motivations behind the cult, making it almost cartoonishly evil.
That makes for an engaging ride, but also a rather shallow one. Jens S Super Reviewer. Aug 23, This movie is definitely not what I would have expected, I mean I didn't really read the description on Netflix, but I assumed it was more like dealing with Pinochet's dictatorship.
I know a boyfriend was involved, but I felt it was more related to Pinochet's military leadership than it was.
I mean it was related, as Daniel was sent to the Colonia Dignidad, literally meaning Colony of Dignity, as a result of the military coup, but the film deals more with the cult-like community of Colonia and its charismatic leader, Paul Schafer.
And cult-like isn't even appropriate, because these people at Colonia Dignidad were a cult, through and through, no doubt about it. Paul exercised his power over everyone in order to do as he wanted, regardless of whether or not it actually falls in line with the stuff he preaches as a 'man of god'.
Anyway, Daniel gets taken to this community and he's at first tortured to, I think, give up people who supported Allende.
The torture is so severe that Daniel is believed to have suffered permanent brain damage as a result, so he's put to work in the community, doing the simplest jobs.
It turns out that, of course, Daniel has been faking his mental impairment all along and that actually helps him as people around him are careless because they think he won't do anything with it.
Which brings us to Lena. Lena decides that to save the man she loves she will join the organization, which presents itself as a charitable mission, and I don't know what her plans actually were honestly.
She never once states that she's going there to save him, though it should've been easy to assume, but the fact of the matter is that she kinda does this impulsively, without really thinking much about what she was gonna do once she actually met up with Daniel.
Of course, once Lena joins the organization, she's put to work and has to live under strict rules. This organization keeps men and women in separate living quarters and they barely interact with each other.
And, of course, the women are treated horribly. In spite of all of that, however, I never felt that the movie was ever good at all.
As far as I'd go, I'd say that this movie is solid, even though I wouldn't give it a score that reflected what I felt. This is like Titanic, where they use something real as backdrop to their own story and, honestly, the story isn't exactly great or all that interesting.
Look, Emma Watson, Daniel Bruhl and Michael Nyqvist are all really good in their roles, I can't complain about their performances whatsoever.
But this would make a better documentary. There's a lot of movies like this and this is one of them. I'd much rather see a documentary about the real life Colonia Dignidad and the horrific events that went on in this cult.
From the sexual abuse of children to the Colonia serving as a front for the DINA to torture and kill prisoners.
That story is more interesting than this one. And I gotta give them props for at least trying to tell a story, but that story hits all the notes one would expect and it doesn't really satisfy as they probably would have expected.
They got a great cast of actors, for sure, and maybe they thought that would have been enough to turn the movie into a good one. There's just something off about the movie, something that I just felt that I'd seen before and the storytelling isn't great to begin with.
It's just not. Again, gotta give them props for putting in some sort of effort, but that effort doesn't pay off.
The film just doesn't pay off in a satisfying manner. Yea, Lena and Daniel managed to escape the cult, but what about those who weren't able to?
And it's not like they were dicks about escaping or they just refused to help others, because it was their intention to be Colonia Dignindad down, but it's just something to think about.
It is what it is, but the movie is, at the very least, watchable in large part to the really talented leads. They sure do help a lot, even if it never reaches a level where I'd feel comfortable saying it was a good movie.

The next single released was "Sve oko mene je grijeh" which charted on the Croatian the national charts and became a hit. Colonia soon signed with the record company Crno-bijeli svijet CBS , which facilitated the release their debut album Vatra i led which sold over 40, copies.
At the final, held on March 6, , the group placed fourth with the song "U ritmu ljubavi" having gained 87 points. A few months later, Colonia won a prize for the song "Lady Blue" at Melodije hrvatskog Jadrana Melodies of the Adriatic , an annual music festival.
Then in , Colonia released their next single "Njeno ime ne zovi u snu" and soon after their second studio album Ritam ljubavi. Colonia soon became one of the best selling musical groups in Croatia, and switched record labels, signing with Croatia Records.
The song "Budi mi zbogom" was entered into the Croatian Radio Festival where it won second place and a cover version of "Deja vu" by the Japanese group KinKi Kids had great success in Asia reaching 1 on the charts.
Colonia's fourth studio album Milijun milja od nigdje was released in and sold 50, copies in Croatia and over , worldwide making it the best-selling album in Croatia.
The album was also released in all Former Yugoslav republics. In , Colonia released their fifth album Izgubljeni svijet which features 13 new tracks and a DVD with their biography, discography, and music videos.
A few months later, The Best of, Volume 1 was released which included all of the hits and singles by the group. In , the album Dolazi oluja was released and its first single "C'est la vie" won the Croatian Radio Festival, Colonia's third win in a row.
Milijun milja od nigdje and Izgubljeni Svijet were released in Slovakia and the Czech Republic where they reached number on the music charts. The song was released in vinyl, as a CD single, and on numerous compilations albums in over 36 countries.
In , Colonia ended their contract with Croatia Records , releasing "Gold Edition", a double disc compilation of hits and remixes, and also after releasing their new album "Najbolje od svega" under their new record label Menart.
Najbolje od svega came close to reaching platinum certification. During Summer , Colonia went on a tour with the name "Gastro club turneja" promoting Najbolje od svega , playing in 22 cities.
The album also includes 13 previously unreleased remixes. On December 5, , Colonia released their eighth studio album Do kraja , a modern dance album with Balkan and Croatian elements, after signing with Menart Records.
The single "Pogledom me skini" was released with three remixes and music video. Colonia released the last single "Fjaka" from the album and it reached number two on the Croatian charts becoming a summer hit and then on July 3, , the group released a limited edition of Do kraja with a second disc featuring eight new remixes.
On October 3, , "Pod sretnom zvijezdom" was released to radio stations throughout Croatia as the first single from the upcoming album Pod sretnom zvijezdom and as a theme song for season of Big Brother Croatia.
After , the band was a little less active than in previous years. At that time, it was still speculated whether the band will announce a new singer, or will completely cease to exist.
Following the announcement, the band has released their first single with a new singer on July 27, Que sera.
It was followed by the second single Zadnja suza on March 6,
