This film is really a glorified episode of Masterpiece Theater but it features some very good performances even if they could be called stagey.
I have found myself becoming a Glenda Jackson fan as I go through all of her Academy Award nominated performances and even if this is not her best she gives all of herself to a very demanding role.
Because this film is based on a play it really does serve as a showcase for performances and the well written dialogue of the legendary Henrik Ibsen as translated and adapted by Trevor Nunn.
Hedda, on the other hand, a stage play filmed with little flair and set to an awful soundtrack, really belongs on Youtube. Even going fullscreen feels like a slight exaggeration.
Though Glenda Jackson makes an ideal Hedda, striking the right balance of cool detachment, this film suffers from an overly faithful screenplay and uninspired direction.
It's quite obvious that the stage play was kept nearly intact and the director chose to just aim his camera at the actors and call for action.
Glenda is the only bright light in the film, and as the infamous heroine, she is blindingly good. Though this part could be played a million different ways, Glenda chooses to make her Hedda float above not only her peers but all of the pathetic trials of humanity.
Often, at the end of the play, the viewer is left to question whether they believe Hedda would really shoot herself over so little, yet Glenda Jackson makes us believe not only that she would, but that it was the only available choice.
