A bit darker movie than I remember, it still has the laugh-out-loud corny humor that never lets things get too serious.
The characters are so lovable that you forget that the movie is so ridiculous baby Splinter doing ninjitsu in his cage is one of the cutest things ever put on film.
The plot itself is kind of vague, but the movie is really about the tender relationship between Splinter and the Turtles, so in that way it's a winner.
If you can put aside a lot of dated production elements and in-your-face product placement, this is a great, odd little movie that really captures the spirit of one particular generation of kids.
Glad I rewatched it after all these years. Two things about this purchase made me nervous: the cheap price and the outer cover of the DVD.

It runs circles around any of the proceeding movies, using the foreboding tones and ideals of its comic origins, whilst balancing the aesthetics and writing to carter to its target audience: children.
The physical props and great acting have made this 's classic stand the test of time, and it honestly hasn't aged a day.
To sum up; if you haven't watched it I urge you to do so immediately. But this review isn't about the praises of the film itself, but on the Blu-Ray transfer.
I own an old DVD copy of this film and it retains everything that is fantastic about it. However, the Blu-Ray version of this movie sacrifices the dark gritty tone for a brighter contrast and spit-polish on the picture, effectively removing a lot of the visual appeal; unearthing costume lines, etc the viewer isn't meant to see.
The best analogy to give would be what happened to The Justice League: a movie that was designed to be visually dark, but when you up the contrast it reveals all the magicians tricks.
The bottom line being, save your money on this and hunt down a DVD copy of the film as it's still superior to this. Great classic film, no matter how many times I watch it, I still enjoy it.
Having it on Blu-ray is great, however with the increased picture clarity it is easier to see some of the little details that should not be seen.

Yes it looks a bit dated compared to films nowadays, yes they are guys in costumes but the film still looks good to me and gives a dose of childhood nostalgia.
Video and audio quality are an improvement on the DVD release but sadly and surprise with the remakes and its original box office there are no extras apart from a trailer.

I think I actually liked watching it more now than I did even as a kid when it came out. The film brilliantly mixes ample humor from beginning to end, with more serious subjects - parental loss and estrangement, urban decay, inner city crime etc.
