John Thackery partially based on historical figure William Stewart Halsted , the new leader of the surgery staff, balances his cocaine and opium addictions against his ambition for medical discovery and his reputation among his peers.
Wright who trained in Paris, and is much more qualified than any other candidate, must fight for respect among the all-white hospital staff, as well as in the racially charged city.
Production for season 1 began in September in New York City. Stanley Burns, founder and CEO of The Burns Archive , served as the on-set medical adviser on the series, and worked closely with production and the actors to make the hospital scenes realistic and authentic to the period.
Jack Amiel and Michael Begler wrote the majority of the first-season episodes, and Steven Soderbergh directed all 10 episodes in the first season.
After the conclusion of the second season on December 18, , it was announced that Cinemax had ordered a script for the season three premiere and a season outline, with negotiations for a third season.
Thackery dies in the season two finale, and that it was all planned from the beginning, and Clive Owen only had a two-year contract for the series.
Soderbergh also said, "I told them [Cinemax] that I'm going to do the first two years and then we are going to break out the story for seasons 3 and 4 and try to find a filmmaker or filmmakers to do this the way that I did.
This is how we want to do this so that every two years, whoever comes on, has the freedom to create their universe.
The network was excited about that and said that sounds cool. I just met with [writers Jack Amiel and Michael Begler] yesterday. We're building our idea of what three and four might look like, to get ready to present [to the network].
It's pretty extreme, but I think it should be. If we can achieve what I'm hoping, story-wise, then I'd like to keep going. What I hope will happen is that we will figure something out that I'll feel like I have to do this".

As a period drama it is lovely to look at, with lavish sets and costumes, and provides insight into the world of medicine in the early 20th century. However, every episode seems to suffer from one subplot too many, and it defies belief as main characters Drs.
John Thackery and Algernon Edwards invent new procedures and devices nearly every episode to miraculously cure their patients.
In real life, most of these procedures were invented by many different doctors over the course of a few decades. The characters lean toward bland, with Thackery as the most interesting, a "Dr.
House" style antihero who has nonetheless been seen before. The Knickerbocker Hospital was located in an immigrant community where the doctors experimented on their poor patients, and in the show the ethical side of this is ignored, with most patients treated as disposable.
Instead the show focuses on the doctors and medical staff. Character development is uneven; characters change overnight with only meager explanation.
Despite the many season-long plot arcs, the show feels frustratingly episodic, with subplots introduced to shock and then dropped.
The last few episodes of the season take a sharp turn away from the medical side of the story and focus more on the characters' personal lives.

This foundation in historical accuracy provides the severs with an undeniable veracity that crates a platform for a trip back in time was establishing itself as a formidable force on the world stage.
Pulling it all together is a showrunner and principle directory, Steven Soderbergh, an auteur who has made his mark in a wide variety of genres in both the mainstream and independent cinema.
Each episode is imbued with his directorial panache and distinctive style that has made his films so successful. One aspect of the medical drama that is crucial to its veracity is how the various situations fraught with tension portrayed.
A prime example is found in the operating room from the very first scene involving surgery the viewer realize that this series will not shy away from the gory details.
